How to make a photography website in India (2026)
Wedding, event, product and portrait photographers lose bookings to whoever shows up first on Google with a portfolio that loads. Here is how to build one in India: domain, galleries, packages, enquiries and the costs involved.
Instagram is where photographers get discovered; the website is where they get booked. A couple planning a wedding in Jaipur will scroll your reels, then search your name, then look for a page that lists packages, shows full galleries and has a form their parents can fill in. If that page does not exist, the enquiry goes to the studio that has one.
A photography website has two technical problems that other small business sites do not: images are large, and clients want to see a lot of them. The steps below are ordered so you solve those two problems early. The same structure works whether you use Neweb for photographers, a WordPress theme or a portfolio builder.
What you'll need
Have these ready; the gallery selection takes longer than the website itself.
- 30 to 60 final images across your genres (wedding, pre-wedding, maternity, product, corporate), exported at 2,000 px on the long edge and under 300 KB each.
- Package list with inclusions: hours of coverage, number of edited photos, album pages, second shooter, drone, delivery timeline.
- A short bio: years of experience, cities you cover, gear is optional, style is not.
- Client testimonials with first names and the event type, or screenshots of WhatsApp messages with consent.
- A domain name, ideally your studio name or your own name plus "photography" or "films".
- WhatsApp Business number and a UPI ID or bank details for advances.
- Logo or wordmark; many photographers use a clean text logo, which the logo maker produces in a minute.
Pick your niche and the one booking you want most
Photography websites fail when they try to sell everything. Decide which booking type pays your rent (weddings for most Indian photographers, product shoots for some, corporate headshots for a few) and build the homepage for that client. Other genres get their own gallery page but do not crowd the top of the home page.
Write the first line of the site for that client: "Candid wedding photography across Gujarat and Rajasthan" tells a couple in Udaipur more than "Capturing moments forever". Mention the cities you actually travel to; it is what people search.
Register a memorable domain
Studio name first: lensandlight.in. If you trade on your own name, use it: priyamehtaphotography.com. Keep it easy to say on a phone call, because that is how wedding referrals happen. A .in domain typically runs ₹500 to ₹900 a year and a .com ₹900 to ₹1,500 at Indian registrars; the first-year promo is usually lower than the renewal, so check both numbers.
Use the domain checker to confirm availability and grab the matching Instagram handle at the same time. Neweb includes a free .in or .com domain in the Starter plan, registered in your name. More on choosing well in our domain name guide.
Choose a platform that handles large galleries
This is where photographers get burnt. Cheap shared hosting with a heavy WordPress theme and 80 uncompressed images produces a homepage that takes 15 seconds on mobile. Your options, with typical 2026 pricing:
- Managed builder (Neweb): ₹249 a month, hosting and SSL included, image optimisation handled, built from your packages and photos.
- WordPress with a portfolio theme: theme ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 one-time, hosting ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 a year, plus a freelancer ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 to set it up.
- Portfolio-specific builders (Pixpa, Format, Squarespace): roughly ₹500 to ₹1,500 a month, billed in dollars for some, with domain extra from year two.
Whichever you pick, test a sample gallery on a phone with mobile data before you commit. Our cost guide has the full comparison.
Structure the site around galleries and packages
Six pages cover almost every photography business in India:
- Home: one hero image, your niche line, three featured galleries, three testimonials, an enquiry button.
- Portfolio: one gallery page per genre (Weddings, Pre-wedding, Maternity and newborn, Products, Corporate). 15 to 25 images each, not 100.
- Packages: three tiers with inclusions and starting prices. Showing "Wedding coverage from ₹45,000" filters out the enquiries you would decline anyway.
- About: who you are, cities you cover, how you work on the day.
- Films if you shoot video: embed from YouTube or Vimeo, never upload video to the site.
- Contact / Enquiry: form with event date, city, event type and budget range, plus WhatsApp and phone.
Compress and label every image
Export at 2,000 px on the long edge, JPEG quality 75 to 80, and run the batch through the image compressor; most wedding frames land at 150 to 300 KB without visible loss. Resize with the image resizer if your editor exports huge files.
Name files descriptively before uploading (candid-wedding-photographer-jaipur-01.jpg, not DSC_4471.jpg) and add alt text that describes the scene and the city. Google Images sends real enquiries to photographers who do this, and almost nobody does. Add a small watermark only if you must; large ones make people leave.
Add enquiry, advance payment and booking terms
An enquiry form that asks for date, city and event type lets you reply with a real quote instead of a round of questions. Put a WhatsApp button next to it, created with the WhatsApp link generator; most Indian clients prefer it.
For advances, list a UPI ID and show a QR from the UPI QR code generator; for larger bookings, a Razorpay payment link lets families split across cards. Publish your terms in two paragraphs: advance percentage, cancellation and date-change policy, delivery timeline, and usage rights for your portfolio. The terms and conditions generator drafts the base text. A written policy prevents most of the disputes photographers complain about.
Get found: Google Business Profile and city keywords
Create a Google Business Profile even if you work from home; choose "Photographer" or "Wedding photographer" as the category, set a service area covering the cities you travel to, and link the website. Upload 20 images and ask every client for a review with the event city in it.
On the site, write one paragraph per city you serve on the About or Packages page ("Wedding photography in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat"). That single paragraph is what ranks for "wedding photographer in Surat". Generate proper titles and descriptions with the meta title generator. Neweb's SEO autopilot writes and updates these for each city you list.
Launch and keep the portfolio current
Check the galleries on a mid-range Android over 4G, confirm the enquiry form delivers to your email and phone, and test the UPI QR with ₹1. Add the site link to Instagram, WhatsApp Business and your Google profile the same day.
Then set a rule: after every major shoot, add three to five frames to the relevant gallery and remove the weakest. A portfolio that changes monthly gets re-crawled, looks alive to clients, and keeps your best current work on top. Review packages every wedding season.
Cost and time summary for a photography website
Typical 2026 figures for a solo photographer or small studio in India.
| Route | Upfront (typical) | Per year after | Time to launch | Handles heavy galleries? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neweb Starter | ₹0 | ₹2,988 (₹249/mo) incl. domain, hosting, SSL | 1 to 2 days | Yes, optimisation built in |
| WordPress + portfolio theme | ₹13,000 to ₹36,000 | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 hosting + domain | 2 to 4 weeks | Only with a good host and caching |
| Pixpa / Format / Squarespace | ₹0 | ₹6,000 to ₹18,000 plan + domain | 3 to 7 days | Yes |
| Agency custom build | ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh | ₹10,000+ AMC | 4 to 8 weeks | Depends on the brief |
All figures are typical ranges seen across Indian vendors in 2026 and vary by city and scope; treat them as planning numbers, not quotes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A 100-image homepage slider. Nobody waits for it. One hero image, then curated galleries.
- No prices anywhere. "Starting from" pricing cuts time-wasting enquiries by half and does not stop serious clients negotiating.
- Uploading full-resolution files. 8 MB images are the single most common reason photography sites feel broken on mobile.
- Background music and autoplay video. It triggers the back button, especially on phones at work.
- No city names on the site. Google cannot rank you for "pre-wedding photographer Lucknow" if Lucknow appears nowhere.
- Portfolio-only, no terms. Advance, cancellation and delivery terms in writing save you from the one bad client a year.

How much does a photography website cost in India?
Typically ₹249 a month all-inclusive on a managed builder like Neweb, ₹13,000 to ₹36,000 upfront plus hosting for a WordPress portfolio built by a freelancer, or ₹6,000 to ₹18,000 a year on a portfolio builder like Pixpa or Squarespace with the domain extra from the second year.
Should photographers list prices on their website?
List starting prices for each package. Clients in India almost always negotiate, but a visible "from ₹45,000" filters out enquiries far below your floor and signals professionalism. Keep detailed quotes for the reply.
How many photos should a photography portfolio website have?
Between 15 and 25 per gallery and 30 to 60 across the site. Clients decide within a dozen images; more only slows the page. Rotate in new work monthly and remove weaker frames.
What image size should I upload to my photography website?
Export at about 2,000 pixels on the long edge at JPEG quality 75 to 80, which lands most frames between 150 and 300 KB. That is sharp on any phone or laptop and loads in under two seconds on 4G.
Is Instagram enough, or do I need a website?
Instagram brings discovery; the website converts it. Parents and corporate clients want packages, terms and full galleries in one place, and Google Business Profile needs a website to link to. Photographers with both typically see more and better-qualified enquiries.
How do I rank for "wedding photographer in my city"?
Mention the city in your page titles and in a paragraph on the Packages or About page, set your Google Business Profile service area to that city, name image files with the city, and collect reviews that mention it. A page per major city you serve helps once you have a few bookings there.
