How to check a domain name in India
Checking whether a website name is available takes three steps and about ten seconds. First, type the name you have in mind without the extension, for example copperovenbakery, not copperovenbakery.com. Second, press Check availability. The domain name checker looks up the name across the eight extensions Indian businesses ask for most: .com, .in, .co, .shop, .co.in, .store, .org and .net. Third, read the results. Green means the name is free on that extension right now, red means somebody already holds it.
Behind the scenes the tool asks Google's public DNS whether each name resolves. That is what makes it instant and free, but it also means the check is a strong signal rather than a legal guarantee. When you register the name, whether through Neweb or another registrar, an authoritative registry query runs before any money changes hands.
Keep names short (14 characters or fewer), avoid hyphens and numbers, and say the name aloud to someone before you fall in love with it. If they can type it after hearing it once, it passes. Our guide to picking a domain name walks through the full test.
.in vs .com vs .co.in: which extension should you pick?
- .com is still the extension people type by default, and the one to choose if you sell outside India or want the broadest recognition. It is also the most contested, so short .com names are hard to find.
- .in is India's country extension. It is cheaper, easier to find, and tells both Google and customers that you are a local business. For a shop, clinic, school or service business that serves Indian customers, .in is a confident choice, not a compromise.
- .co.in works the same way as .in but is longer to say and type. Pick it only when the .in is taken and the name is worth keeping.
- .shop, .store, .co suit online stores and startups. Watch the renewal price, which is often several times the first-year promo.
A common pattern for growing businesses: register the .com and the .in together, run the site on one and forward the other, so a competitor cannot take the twin.
What to do if the domain name is taken
Most first-choice names are taken, so plan for it. Try these in order:
- Change the extension. If the .com is gone, check .in and .co.in. If those are gone too, the name may simply be too generic.
- Add a modifier. A city (copperovenjaipur), a category (copperovenbakery) or a short verb (getcopperoven, trycopperoven) often frees up a strong name. Modifiers that describe what you do also help people remember it.
- Try a variation. Run the domain name generator to get dozens of spellings, compounds and suffixes from one keyword, or start earlier with the business name generator if the brand itself is still open.
- Make an offer. Parked domains are sometimes for sale. Expect to pay anywhere from a few thousand rupees to lakhs, and use an escrow service, never a direct transfer.
- Do not copy a live business. If the .com belongs to an active company in your category, taking the same name on .in invites confusion and trademark trouble.

Check the name against trademarks, GST and MCA too
An available domain is not the same as a name you can safely use. Before you print signboards, run three more checks. Search the name on the IP India trademark public search in your class of goods or services; a registered mark can force you to give up the domain later. If you plan to register a company or LLP, check the MCA name availability tool, because the Registrar of Companies will reject names that are too close to an existing company. And if you are already GST-registered, keep the trade name on your GST certificate, your Udyam registration and your domain consistent, so customers and banks see one business, not three. How do I check if a domain name is available?
Type the name you want (without the extension) into the domain name checker above and press Check availability. In about a second you get a result for .com, .in, .co, .shop, .co.in, .store, .org and .net. A green Available row means nobody is currently using that name on that extension. A red Taken row means it already points to a live site or is parked. The check runs through Google's public DNS, so it is fast and free, and the authoritative WHOIS confirmation happens the moment you register.
Is this domain checker really free?

Should an Indian business choose .in or .com?
If most of your customers are in India, .in is a perfectly credible choice, is usually cheaper, and signals to Google and to buyers that you are a local business. If you expect customers abroad, or you want the extension people type by default, .com is still the safest. Many Indian businesses register both, use .com as the main site and forward .in to it, so nobody else can trade on the name. .co.in is fine too but is longer to say out loud.
What does it mean when a domain shows as Taken?
Taken means the name already has DNS records on that extension, which almost always means somebody registered it. It may be an active business, a parked page, or a domain investor holding it. You can look up the owner through a public WHOIS lookup and make an offer, but for a small business it is usually faster and cheaper to pick a variation or a different extension.
Can the checker be wrong?
Occasionally. This tool checks whether a name resolves in DNS rather than querying the registry directly, so a domain that is registered but has no DNS records can show as Available, and a name that was just released can briefly show as Taken. Do I need a GST number or company registration to buy a domain?
No. Anyone in India can register a domain with just a name, an email address and a payment method, and .in domains only require that you provide accurate contact details to the registrar. GST or company registration matters later, when you want the business name on your invoices, your Udyam certificate and your domain to match, which is why it is worth checking the name on the MCA and trademark databases before you commit.
What if the .com is taken but the .in is free?
Registering the .in is a reasonable move if your business is India-focused, but first check who owns the .com. If it is an active company in the same line of business, using the same name on .in invites confusion and possible trademark complaints. If the .com is parked or unrelated, take the .in and consider a short prefix or suffix such as get, hq, india or your city so you can also secure a .com later.
