How to Check Domain Name Availability in India (Free, Correctly)

How to actually check if a domain name is free, why different checkers give different answers, and what to check beyond simple availability before you buy.

Checking whether a domain name is available sounds simple, and mostly it is, but a surprising number of business owners get inconsistent answers from different tools and end up confused about what is actually free. This covers how domain availability checking actually works, why results vary, and what else to check before you commit to a name.

Check it here first

Use our free domain checker to search a name across common extensions (.com, .in, .co.in, and others) in one query. Type the name without "www" or "https://", just the name itself, for example "mystorename" rather than a full URL.

Why different domain checkers sometimes disagree

If you have tried more than one domain checker and gotten different answers, this is usually one of these reasons:

  • Caching: some checkers show slightly stale data and have not refreshed against the live registry in the last few minutes. A domain that was just registered by someone else can briefly show as available on a cached checker.
  • Different extensions checked by default: one checker might default to .com only, another might check .in and .com together, making it look like results disagree when they are actually checking different things.
  • Premium domain pricing hidden: a domain can be "available" but priced far above standard rates because it is flagged as premium (short, dictionary word, high commercial value). Some checkers show this clearly, others bury it until checkout.
  • Domain privacy or parking pages: a domain that looks unused because it shows a blank or "for sale" page is still registered and not available, even though it appears inactive.

The only fully reliable way to confirm availability at the moment of purchase is checking directly through a registrar at checkout, since domain availability can technically change within minutes (though this is rare for anything beyond extremely short or generic names).

What to check beyond "is it available"

Availability is the first filter, not the only one. Before you commit to a name, also check:

Trademark conflicts. A domain being available does not mean the name is free to use commercially. Search the name against India's trademark database (ipindiaonline.gov.in) if you are building a brand you intend to protect, registering a domain that infringes an existing trademark can force a costly rebrand later.

Social media handle availability. A domain with no matching handle on Instagram, WhatsApp Business, or Google Business Profile creates brand inconsistency. Check your top two or three platforms before finalizing.

Similar existing businesses. A quick Google search of the exact name plus your city or industry catches conflicts a domain checker cannot, an existing local business with an almost-identical name in your city, even in a different industry, can create real customer confusion.

Extension choice. .com is the default expectation for most customers, but .in and .co.in are strong, credible choices for a business specifically targeting Indian customers, and are often available when the exact .com is not. Our guide to picking a domain name covers how to choose between extensions and what actually matters for SEO and trust versus what is just habit.

Common domain-checking mistakes

Checking with spaces or special characters. Domain names cannot contain spaces, so "my store name" needs to become "mystorename" or "my-store-name" before checking, results can look wrong simply because of formatting.

Assuming .com unavailability means the name is taken everywhere. A huge number of .com domains are registered but genuinely unused, sitting inactive, or held by domain resellers hoping someone will buy them out. This does not mean your business cannot use that name, it just means you will likely need a different extension or a slight variation.

Not checking before building a brand. Choosing a business name, ordering signage, and printing business cards before confirming the domain is available is one of the most common and avoidable mistakes small business owners make. Check first, every time, even for a name you are fairly confident about.

Confusing domain registration with website hosting. A registered domain does not automatically come with a website, email, or hosting, it is just the name. You will need to connect it to wherever your site actually lives. Neweb includes a free domain, hosting, and business email together in one plan specifically to remove this extra step, since it is a common point of confusion for first-time business owners.

Quick checklist before you buy

  1. Check the exact name across .com, .in, and .co.in using the domain checker
  2. Search the name plus your city or industry on Google to catch existing local conflicts
  3. Check your top social platforms for matching handles
  4. If the name is core to your brand identity, do a quick trademark search
  5. Buy the domain before you invest in signage, cards, or marketing material with the name on it

A domain costs a fraction of what a rebrand costs later. Checking properly, once, at the start is the cheapest insurance a new business can buy.
