How to make a boutique website in India (2026)
Boutiques sell on Instagram and WhatsApp; a website is what makes the selling repeatable. This guide covers catalogue pages, ordering, payments, returns and GST for a boutique or fashion store, in seven steps with typical costs.
If you run a boutique, your current "website" is probably an Instagram grid plus a WhatsApp number where customers ask "price?" under every post. That works at 50 orders a month and breaks at 200. A website gives each piece a page with price, sizes, fabric and a buy button, lets you reply to "price?" with a link, and keeps selling while you are at the tailor.
You do not need a full e-commerce platform on day one. Most Indian boutiques do best with a catalogue site plus WhatsApp or UPI ordering, then add a cart when order volume justifies the extra tooling. Neweb for boutiques is built for that path; the steps below apply to any tool.
What you'll need
Collect these first. Product photos and sizes are the slow part.
- Product list with name, price, sizes, fabric, colours, care instructions and stock status for your current collection (20 to 60 pieces is a good start).
- Two to four photos per piece: front, back, detail, and one worn if possible, on a plain background, under 300 KB after compression.
- Size chart in inches and centimetres for each garment type (kurta, blouse, lehenga, co-ord).
- Shipping and returns policy: charges by zone, dispatch time, exchange window, who pays return courier.
- Payment details: UPI ID, and a Razorpay or Cashfree account if you want cards and EMI.
- Business details: trade name, address, GSTIN if registered (see the GST and online selling guide).
- Domain idea matching your Instagram handle, checked with the domain checker.
Decide between a catalogue site and a full online store
A catalogue site shows every piece with price and sizes and takes orders over WhatsApp or a simple form. A full store has a cart, checkout, automated payment capture and order emails. The catalogue route launches in a day, costs little, and suits made-to-order and limited-stock boutiques where you talk to the customer anyway. The store route suits ready-stock inventory with 200 or more orders a month.
Start with the catalogue unless you already ship daily. You can add a cart later without changing the domain or the pages. Our comparison of Instagram shop vs your own website covers when the switch pays off.
Register a domain that matches your Instagram handle
Customers will type what they saw on Instagram. If your handle is @zarivastra, aim for zarivastra.in or zarivastra.com. A .in domain typically costs ₹500 to ₹900 a year, a .com ₹900 to ₹1,500, and the renewal is usually above the first-year price. Neweb includes a free .in or .com with the Starter plan, registered in your name.
Avoid trendy spellings (shoppe, kloset) unless they are already your brand; they are hard to say aloud. Try the domain name generator if your first choice is taken.
Build the pages a boutique needs
- Home: hero image of the current collection, three category tiles (Kurtas, Sarees, Festive, Kids), a "new this week" strip, and a WhatsApp button.
- Collection pages: one page per category, each piece as a card with photo, name, price and sizes available.
- Product pages (or an expanding card): four photos, price, fabric, sizes, "order on WhatsApp" with the product name pre-filled, and delivery time.
- Size guide: one page, both units, how to measure.
- Shipping and returns, About (your story, your city, your tailoring), Contact.
Write product descriptions in the language your customers use; Hinglish is fine. "Chanderi silk kurta, hand block printed in Jaipur, relaxed fit" sells better than "Elegant ethnic wear".
Set up ordering: WhatsApp first, cart later
Create a WhatsApp link per product with the WhatsApp link generator, pre-filled as "Hi, I'd like to order: Chanderi Kurta, size M". It removes the "which one?" back-and-forth. Pair it with a WhatsApp Business catalogue so repeat customers can browse inside the chat.
When you move to a cart, keep WhatsApp as a secondary button; many customers in India still want to confirm with a human before paying for a ₹4,000 lehenga.
Add payments: UPI, cards and cash on delivery
Put a UPI QR and UPI ID on the order confirmation step using the UPI QR code generator; it is free and settles instantly. For cards, EMI and payment links, Razorpay or Cashfree typically charge about 2% per transaction and take a day to set up with your PAN and bank details.
Cash on delivery still drives a large share of fashion orders outside metros. Offer it with a small COD fee (₹50 to ₹100 is common) or a partial UPI advance to reduce refusals; our post on COD vs prepaid goes deeper. Issue receipts with the payment receipt generator or GST invoices if registered.
Write shipping, returns and the legal footer
Fashion has the highest return rates of any category, and most disputes are about expectations. State on every product page: dispatch in X days, delivery in Y days by zone, exchange within 7 days for size only, return courier paid by whom, and no returns on custom-stitched pieces. Publish a short privacy policy and terms; payment gateways ask for both.
In the footer put your legal business name, address, email and GSTIN if you have one. Under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules a seller selling online must display contact details and a grievance contact; a line with an email and a response time covers it for a small boutique.
Connect Instagram, Google and launch
Put the website in your Instagram bio with the Instagram bio generator, and start replying to "price?" comments with the product link. Create a Google Business Profile as "Boutique" or "Women's clothing store" with your address or delivery area, and add the collection photos there too.
Before launch: test an order end to end on a phone, pay ₹1 via the UPI QR, and check that product photos load in under two seconds on mobile data (compress with the image compressor). After launch, update the "new this week" strip every week; it is the cheapest way to look alive to both customers and Google.
Cost and time summary for a boutique website
Typical 2026 figures for a single-brand boutique in India selling 20 to 100 pieces.
| Route | Upfront (typical) | Per year after | Time to launch | Payments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neweb Starter (catalogue + WhatsApp) | ₹0 | ₹2,988 (₹249/mo) incl. domain, hosting, SSL | 1 to 2 days | UPI QR, payment links |
| Shopify store | ₹0 | ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 plan + ~2% gateway + domain | 1 to 2 weeks | Cart, cards, COD apps |
| WooCommerce via freelancer | ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 | ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 hosting + plugins | 3 to 5 weeks | Cart, any gateway |
| Instagram + WhatsApp only | ₹0 | ₹0 | Today | Manual UPI |
All figures are typical ranges seen across Indian vendors in 2026 and vary by city and scope; treat them as planning numbers, not quotes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- No prices on product pages. "DM for price" trains customers to haggle and hides you from Google Shopping and search.
- Photos on a cluttered background. A plain wall and daylight beat a studio you cannot afford.
- No size chart. It is the top cause of exchanges; one page fixes it.
- Returns policy only in a DM. If it is not on the site, the customer's version wins the argument.
- Building a full store before you have orders. Monthly platform fees and app subscriptions eat a small boutique's margin; start with a catalogue.
- Ignoring GST thresholds. Selling through your own site in your home state is treated differently from selling on marketplaces; read the GST guide before you scale.

How much does a boutique website cost in India?
A catalogue site with WhatsApp ordering typically costs ₹249 a month on Neweb with domain and hosting included. A Shopify store runs ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 a year plus about 2% per transaction, and a WooCommerce build from a freelancer typically costs ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 upfront plus ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 a year.
Do I need GST registration to sell clothes from my own website?
If you sell only within your state and your turnover is under the threshold (₹40 lakh for goods in most states, ₹20 lakh in some special category states), registration is generally not mandatory. Selling to other states through your own site usually requires registration. Marketplaces like Amazon and Myntra require a GSTIN regardless. Confirm with a CA for your state.
Can customers order on WhatsApp from my website?
Yes. Each product gets a WhatsApp link with the product name and size pre-filled, so the customer taps once and the order message lands in your WhatsApp Business chat. Many Indian boutiques run entirely on this before adding a cart.
Should I offer cash on delivery?
Outside metro cities, yes, as a large share of fashion orders are COD. Charge a small COD fee or take a partial UPI advance to cut refusals, and prepay-only for custom-stitched pieces.
How do I take product photos for a boutique website?
Use daylight near a window, a plain wall or white sheet, and shoot front, back and one fabric detail per piece. Keep the same frame for every product so the collection page looks consistent. Compress each image to under 300 KB.
Is Instagram enough for a boutique?
Instagram is excellent for discovery but poor for repeat orders, search traffic and anyone who wants to see sizes and prices without messaging. A website holds the catalogue and policies; Instagram sends people to it.
