How to make a freelancer portfolio website in India (2026)
A portfolio website is what separates a freelancer with a rate card from one who takes whatever Upwork offers. Here is how to build one in India: positioning, case studies, services, enquiry, payments and the GST lines you need, in seven steps.
Designers, developers, writers, video editors, consultants and CAs in India increasingly get work from referrals that start with "send me your website". A LinkedIn profile answers "who are you"; a portfolio site answers "what have you done, what do you charge, and how do I hire you". It also lets you escape platforms that take 10 to 20 percent and push you to compete on price.
The site does not need to be big. Five pages, three case studies and a clear way to contact you beat a 20-page template with Lorem ipsum left in. The steps work on Neweb for freelancers or any builder.
What you'll need
Collect these before you build. Case studies are the slow part, so start with them.
- Three to six case studies: client type (name if allowed), problem, what you did, result with a number, and two or three images or a link.
- Services list with scope, typical turnaround and starting prices or hourly or day rates.
- A short bio: what you do, for whom, how long, and the one thing you are known for.
- Testimonials from clients, with name and company or at least role and industry.
- Your own domain, ideally your name (ananyadesigns.in) or a studio name, checked on the domain checker.
- Payment setup: UPI ID, bank details for NEFT, and a gateway or PayPal account if you take international clients.
- PAN and GSTIN if registered (service providers typically need GST above ₹20 lakh turnover, and for most inter-state or export services; confirm with a CA).
Pick a niche sentence and put it in the headline
"Freelance designer" gets you compared with everyone on Fiverr. "Brand identity and packaging for D2C food brands" gets you hired by a D2C food brand at your rate. Write a sentence with the service, the client type and the outcome, and make it the first line of the homepage. If you serve two niches, lead with the one that pays better and mention the other on the Services page.
Mention your city and that you work remotely across India (and internationally if you do). "Based in Indore, working with clients across India" ranks for local searches and reassures remote clients.
Register your name as a domain and set up email on it
Your name or studio name is the domain: rohanwrites.in, pixelandpaper.co. A .in typically costs ₹500 to ₹900 a year, a .com ₹900 to ₹1,500, and .co or .design more. Neweb includes a free .in or .com in the Starter plan, registered to you. Set up an email on the domain (hello@rohanwrites.in); invoices from a Gmail address look like a side hustle to a procurement team. The business email guide walks through it.
Write case studies, not a gallery
A grid of thumbnails shows what things looked like; a case study shows what you are like to work with. Use the same four headings for each: the client and the problem, what you did (with constraints: budget, timeline, stakeholders), the result (a number: 38% more sign-ups, 2 weeks to launch, ₹4 lakh in first-month sales), and what you would do differently. Three strong ones beat twelve thin ones.
- If a client cannot be named, describe them: "a Series A fintech in Bengaluru".
- Compress images with the image compressor; developers and designers are judged on load time more than most.
- Writers: link or embed the published piece and add one line on the brief.
Publish services with scope and starting prices
Listing prices is the most argued-over decision for Indian freelancers. The evidence from freelancers who do it: fewer low-budget enquiries, faster closes, and clients who do not try to negotiate a ₹40,000 project down to ₹8,000. Show "starting from" or a range per service, with what is included and how many revisions. Keep hourly rates off the site unless you genuinely bill hourly; project pricing earns more.
Add a one-line process ("Call, proposal in 2 days, 50% advance, delivery, balance") so the client knows what happens next. The quotation generator gives you a clean proposal format to match.
Add a contact flow that qualifies the lead
A form with four fields does the qualifying for you: what do you need, budget range (give options starting at your minimum), timeline, and how did you find me. Add a WhatsApp button made with the WhatsApp link generator for Indian clients and a Calendly-style booking link if you take discovery calls. Reply within a working day; most freelance work goes to the first competent reply.
Set up payments, invoicing and the GST lines
Indian clients: UPI for small invoices, NEFT or IMPS for larger ones, and a payment link from Razorpay or Cashfree for card payments (typically about 2% fee). International clients: PayPal, Wise or a gateway that supports export invoices; expect a currency margin.
Invoice properly from day one. If you are GST-registered, use the GST invoice generator (18% for most services; exports can be zero-rated under LUT). If not registered, a simple invoice with your PAN is enough, and clients may deduct TDS under Section 194J; estimate it with the TDS calculator. Put your legal name, address, PAN and GSTIN (if any) in the footer; it is what a client's finance team checks before paying. Launch, link everywhere, and update quarterly
Test the form and WhatsApp link from a phone, check that case study images load fast, and read every page once for leftover placeholder text. Then put the link in your LinkedIn headline and featured section, Instagram bio, email signature (the email signature generator helps) and every platform profile you keep.
Every quarter: add the best project, retire the weakest, and adjust prices. Set up Google Search Console in ten minutes so you can see which searches bring clients; freelancers are often surprised that "[niche] freelancer in [city]" queries find them within a few months.
Cost and time summary for a freelancer portfolio website
Typical 2026 figures for a solo freelancer in India. Compare with platform fees of 10 to 20 percent on every project.
| Route | Upfront (typical) | Per year after | Time to launch | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neweb Starter | ₹0 | ₹2,988 (₹249/mo) incl. domain, hosting, SSL | 1 day | Built from your bio and case studies |
| Free builder on a subdomain | ₹0 | ₹0 | Same day | yourname.builder.com; weak for clients |
| WordPress, self-built | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 theme + domain | ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 hosting + domain | 1 to 2 weeks | Your time, plugin updates |
| Hire another freelancer | ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 | ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 hosting + domain | 2 to 4 weeks | Edits cost money |
All figures are typical ranges seen across Indian vendors in 2026 and vary by city and scope; treat them as planning numbers, not quotes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A gallery with no story. Clients want to know what the brief was and what changed, not just what it looked like.
- No prices, no process. It invites ₹5,000 offers for ₹50,000 work and a week of negotiation.
- Gmail on the invoice. Finance teams and procurement portals take domain email more seriously.
- Generic headline. "Creative professional" tells nobody anything; name the service and the client type.
- Portfolio last updated 2023. Clients assume you are either too busy or no longer working; update quarterly.
- Ignoring GST and TDS. A surprise 10% TDS deduction or a GST notice is avoidable with a 30-minute CA call.

How much does a freelancer portfolio website cost in India?
Typically ₹249 a month on Neweb with domain and hosting included, ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 plus hosting if you build it yourself on WordPress, or ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 if you hire someone. Free builders cost nothing but keep you on a subdomain that clients notice.
Should freelancers put prices on their website?
Starting prices or ranges, yes. Freelancers who show prices get fewer low-budget enquiries and close faster; clients who can afford you are not put off by a number. Keep exact quotes for the proposal.
Do freelancers in India need GST registration?
Generally once turnover crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states), and typically for inter-state supply of services or exports in many cases. Exports of services can be zero-rated under an LUT. Rules have exceptions; confirm with a CA before your first large invoice.
How many projects should a portfolio website show?
Three to six detailed case studies. Each should state the problem, what you did, and a measurable result. More is not better; weak projects dilute the strong ones.
Is a LinkedIn profile enough instead of a website?
LinkedIn proves you exist; a website proves you deliver and tells clients how to hire you. The combination works best: LinkedIn for discovery and networking, the website for case studies, pricing and the enquiry form.
How do I take payments from international clients as an Indian freelancer?
PayPal and Wise are the common routes for small invoices; payment gateways with export support work for larger ones. Expect a currency conversion margin, invoice in the client currency with your PAN and GSTIN if any, and keep FIRC or equivalent records for exports.
