How to make a bakery website in India (2026)

Bakeries and home bakers in India sell custom cakes through Instagram DMs and lose half the orders in the back-and-forth. A website with a menu, a custom-order form and UPI payment fixes that. Seven steps, with typical 2026 costs.

A bakery's biggest orders, birthday and wedding cakes, are the ones that need the most information: size, flavour, design, egg or eggless, date, delivery address. Taking all that over Instagram DMs means missed details and a baker typing the same questions forty times a week. A website captures it in one form, shows prices so customers stop asking, and gives Google Maps a page to send "cake shop near me" searches to.

You do not need an online store with a cart. Most Indian bakeries do best with a menu site, a custom-order form and WhatsApp plus UPI for payment. Neweb for bakeries is built for exactly that; the steps apply to any builder.

What you'll need

Have these ready; the menu with prices is most of the work.

  • Menu with prices by category: cakes by weight (500 g, 1 kg, 2 kg) and flavour, cupcakes, brownies, breads, cookies, with egg and eggless marked.
  • Custom cake options: tiers, fondant vs cream, photo cakes, themed designs, and the minimum notice needed for each.
  • Delivery details: areas or radius covered, charges, pickup address and timings, same-day cutoff.
  • 12 to 20 photos of actual products in daylight on a plain background, compressed to under 300 KB.
  • FSSAI registration or licence number (home bakers need at least the basic registration).
  • WhatsApp Business number and a UPI ID, plus a payment gateway if you want card payments or advances via link.
  • A domain name matching your Instagram handle, checked on the domain checker.
01

Decide what you sell online: everyday items, custom cakes or both

Everyday bakes (brownies, cookies, breads) suit a simple menu with WhatsApp or cart ordering. Custom cakes need a form and a conversation. Most bakeries do both, so build two paths: "Order from the menu" and "Order a custom cake". Decide your minimum notice (24 hours for cream cakes, 3 to 5 days for fondant and tiers is typical) and your delivery radius; both go on the homepage so customers self-filter.

02

Register the domain and keep names consistent

Use the bakery name: sugarandspicebakes.in, thecakeroomnagpur.com. A .in typically costs ₹500 to ₹900 a year and a .com ₹900 to ₹1,500; Neweb includes a free .in or .com in your name with the Starter plan. Make the domain, Instagram handle and Google Business name match; customers hear the name from a friend and type it.

03

Build a text menu with prices, egg and eggless marked

Type the menu out; do not upload a photo of it. Each item: name, short description, price per size, egg or eggless, and whether it needs advance notice. Group as Cakes, Cupcakes and brownies, Breads and savouries, Cookies and gifting. A text menu is what makes you appear for "eggless chocolate cake in Vashi" searches, which no Instagram post can do.

  • Show prices including GST if you charge it.
  • Add two or three photos per category, run through the image compressor.
  • Mark allergens (nuts, gluten) where relevant.
04

Create the custom cake order form

This form replaces forty DM questions. Fields: occasion, date needed, weight, flavour, egg or eggless, design notes with a reference image upload, message on the cake, delivery or pickup, address and phone. After submission, show a note: "We confirm within 2 hours on WhatsApp, 50% advance to lock the date." Pair it with a WhatsApp button built with the WhatsApp link generator for customers who prefer to chat.

Publish your custom-cake policy next to the form: minimum notice, advance, cancellation window, and that fondant colours may vary. It prevents the disputes that home bakers complain about most.

05

Take advances and payments on UPI and payment links

Add a UPI QR and UPI ID with the UPI QR code generator on the order confirmation page and on your counter. For card payments and advances from relatives in other cities, a Razorpay or Cashfree payment link works and typically costs about 2% per transaction. Issue a receipt for each advance using the payment receipt generator or a GST invoice if registered; it reassures first-time customers paying ₹3,000 upfront to someone they found on Instagram.

06

Add delivery, pickup, FSSAI and the legal footer

State delivery areas or a radius, charges (a flat ₹60 to ₹120 within 5 km is common), timing windows, and the same-day cutoff. For pickup, give the exact address with a landmark and timings. Put your FSSAI number in the footer with your business name, address, phone, email and GSTIN if registered, and link a short privacy policy. Home bakers: the basic FSSAI registration is quick and inexpensive, and customers and Google alike treat it as a trust mark.

07

Set up Google Business Profile and launch

Claim a Google Business Profile as "Bakery" (or "Cake shop", "Dessert shop") with your address, or as a service-area business if you deliver from home and do not want walk-ins. Link the website and menu, upload product photos, and ask every customer for a review with a photo of the cake; cake reviews with photos are unusually persuasive.

Before launch, submit a test custom order from a phone and pay ₹1 by UPI to check the flow. Then put the link in your Instagram bio with the Instagram bio generator, on WhatsApp Business, and on your box labels. Update the menu with seasonal items (Diwali gifting, Christmas plum cake) a month ahead; those pages rank when people start searching.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Menu as an image. Unsearchable by Google and unreadable on a phone; type it out.
  • No prices. "DM for price" costs you every customer who was ready to order at 11 pm.
  • No minimum-notice or advance policy on the site. You will get a 2-tier fondant request for tomorrow morning, repeatedly.
  • Dark, cluttered product photos. Daylight and a plain background sell cakes; filters do not.
  • Missing FSSAI number. It is required and it is the first thing a cautious parent ordering a kids' cake looks for.
  • Delivery radius not stated. Orders from 25 km away that you then decline cost goodwill.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bakery website cost in India?

Typically ₹249 a month on Neweb with domain, hosting and a custom-order form included; ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 upfront plus ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 a year from a freelancer; or ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 a year on a Shopify or WooCommerce store with gateway fees on top.

Do home bakers need FSSAI to sell online?

Yes, at least the basic FSSAI registration, which small food businesses can obtain online at low cost. Display the number on your website footer and packaging. Delivery platforms also ask for it.

How do I take custom cake orders on a website?

Use a form that captures occasion, date, weight, flavour, egg or eggless, design notes with an image upload, message on cake, and delivery details, followed by a WhatsApp confirmation and a UPI advance. It replaces dozens of DM questions per order.

Should a bakery take payments online?

At minimum, a UPI QR code and UPI ID for advances and full payments. Add a payment link (Razorpay, Cashfree) for card payments and for relatives ordering from another city. Full cart checkout is only needed at high everyday-order volume.

How do I show up for "cake shop near me"?

Claim your Google Business Profile with the Bakery or Cake shop category, link your website and menu, add product photos and recent reviews, and mention your locality on the website. A text menu with flavour names helps you appear for specific cake searches too.

Can I run a bakery website without a physical shop?

Yes. Home bakers set the Google Business Profile as a service-area business (no walk-ins), state delivery areas and pickup rules on the website, and use the custom-order form and WhatsApp for everything else.
