A domain name is the unique, human-readable address that people type into a browser to reach a website, such as sharmasweets.in or neweb.ai. It is registered for a yearly fee through a registrar, is owned by whoever registers it, and points to the server where the website is hosted.
Why it matters for an Indian small business
Your domain is the only part of your online presence you fully own. Instagram handles, Google Business Profiles and marketplace listings all live on someone else's platform; a domain in your name goes wherever you go. It also becomes your email address (orders@sharmasweets.in reads better than sharmasweets1987@gmail.com on a quotation), appears on your GST invoices and visiting cards, and is what customers remember after seeing a hoarding or a WhatsApp message.
Cost is low in India: a .in domain is roughly ₹500 to ₹900 a year, a .com is ₹900 to ₹1,500, and a .co.in is often under ₹500. The expensive part is losing one: if a renewal lapses, a reseller can buy the name and offer it back for ₹20,000 or more.
How it works
Domain names are organised as a hierarchy. The part at the end (.in, .com, .shop) is the top-level domain, or TLD. The name in front of it (sharmasweets) is what you register. Registrars accredited by the TLD operator (NIXI for .in, ICANN-accredited registrars for .com) sell names on a first-come basis and record you as the registrant in the WHOIS database.
Once registered, the domain does nothing on its own. You point it at a web server using DNS records, and the hosting provider serves your pages when someone visits. A separate record (MX) routes email. Renewal is yearly or multi-year; most registrars give a short grace period after expiry before the name is released.
Example: a Kolkata sweet shop
Sharma Sweets in Bhowanipore has been selling sandesh since 1987 and gets most of its orders on WhatsApp. The owner registers sharmasweets.in for ₹699 a year. The .com was taken by an unrelated bakery in Ohio, so .in is the better choice anyway: customers searching from Kolkata see a local-looking address. The domain is set to auto-renew, the owner's own email and PAN are on the registration, and orders@sharmasweets.in is printed on every box. When the shop later lists on Zomato and Swiggy, the website address stays the same on every platform.
Common mistakes
- Letting the web designer register the domain in their own name, then losing it when the relationship ends.
- Choosing a name with hyphens, numbers or unusual spellings that customers cannot say aloud on a phone call.
- Missing a renewal because the registrar email went to an old inbox.
- Registering only .com when the business is local and the .in or .co.in is what people in the city expect.
- Buying a domain from a reseller at a huge markup when a near-identical name is free.

Domain Name questions
How much does a domain name cost in India?
A .in domain typically costs ₹500 to ₹900 a year and a .com ₹900 to ₹1,500, with first-year promotional prices sometimes lower and renewal prices higher. Neweb includes one domain free for the first year on every plan.
Should I pick .in or .com?
For a business that serves customers in India, .in signals locality and is often available when the .com is taken. Pick .com if you sell internationally or want the most familiar extension. Many businesses register both and redirect one to the other.
Who owns the domain if my designer registered it?
Whoever is listed as the registrant in the registrar account owns it. Always make sure the registration is in your name and your email address, and that you can log in to the registrar account yourself.
Can I change my domain name later?
Yes, but it costs rankings and trust. Every link, Google Business listing, invoice and visiting card has to be updated, and you should set up redirects from the old name for at least a year.
What happens if my domain expires?
The site and email stop working. Most registrars allow renewal within a grace period, sometimes with a late fee. After that the name can be released and bought by anyone, including resellers who may demand a high price to return it.
