Neweb / Glossary / Canonical URL

What is a Canonical URL?

The preferred address of a page when the same content is reachable at several URLs.

Definition

A canonical URL is the single preferred web address for a page that a site declares to search engines using a rel=canonical link tag, so that when the same content is reachable at several URLs, such as with and without www or with tracking parameters, Google indexes and ranks only the chosen one.

Why it matters for an Indian small business

The same page on a small business site is often reachable at four or five addresses: http and https, with and without www, with a trailing slash, with a UTM tag from a WhatsApp campaign, and sometimes as both .html and extensionless. Google treats each as a separate page, splits ranking signals between them and may index the one you did not want, such as the version with a campaign tag. A canonical tag collects those signals onto one URL.

It also matters for product and service pages that appear in several categories, and for syndicated content such as a blog post republished on Medium or LinkedIn, where a canonical back to your site keeps the credit with you.

How it works

Each page includes a link element in its head with rel set to canonical and href set to the full preferred URL, usually itself. Google treats this as a strong hint, not a command, and combines it with redirects, sitemaps and internal links to choose the indexed version. A page that canonicalises to another page is normally dropped from the index in favour of the target.

Best practice is a self-referencing canonical on every page, consistent internal linking to the same form of each URL, 301 redirects from http to https and from www to non-www (or the reverse), and a sitemap that lists only canonical URLs. Search Console's URL Inspection tool shows which URL Google selected as canonical for any page.

Example: a Goa scooter rental

Calangute Rides lists its scooter fleet at calanguterides.com/scooters, but WhatsApp broadcasts link to the same page with ?utm_source=whatsapp, and an old flyer QR code points to www.calanguterides.com/scooters.html. Search Console shows all three indexed, each with a share of the impressions, and the tagged version ranking for the main query. Adding a self-referencing canonical to the clean URL and redirecting the .html and www versions consolidates everything within three weeks. The single page moves from position seven to position three for scooter rental Calangute, and bookings via the site rise ahead of the December season.

Common mistakes

  • No canonical at all, leaving Google to guess among http, https and www versions.
  • Pointing every page's canonical at the homepage, which de-indexes the whole site.
  • Canonical URLs that differ from the ones in the sitemap and internal links.
  • Using a relative path instead of the full absolute URL.
  • Canonicalising paginated or filtered pages to the wrong target so products disappear from the index.

How Neweb handles it

Neweb adds a self-referencing absolute canonical to every page, enforces one URL form with redirects from http, www and .html variants, and lists only canonical URLs in the sitemap it submits to Google.

FAQ

Canonical URL questions

What does rel=canonical do?

It tells search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page so that duplicates are consolidated and only the preferred one is ranked.

Should every page have a canonical tag?

Yes, a self-referencing one. It costs nothing and protects against duplicates created by tracking parameters, mirrors and old links.

Is a canonical the same as a redirect?

No. A redirect sends visitors and crawlers to the new URL; a canonical leaves the page accessible but tells Google which version to index. Use redirects for moved pages and canonicals for duplicates that must remain reachable.

How do I check what Google chose as canonical?

Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console. It shows the user-declared canonical and the Google-selected canonical.

Does a canonical tag pass ranking signals?

Yes. Signals from duplicate URLs are consolidated onto the canonical target, which is the main reason to use it.
