An XML sitemap is a file, usually at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, that lists the URLs of a website you want search engines to crawl and index, optionally with the date each page last changed. Submitting it in Google Search Console helps Google discover new and updated pages faster, especially on new or large sites.
Why it matters for an Indian small business
A new business site has no links pointing to it, so Google may take weeks to find pages beyond the homepage. A sitemap submitted to Search Console tells Google every page exists on day one. It also tells Google when a page changed, so an updated price list or a new Diwali offer gets recrawled sooner. For a site with 50 product or locality pages, it is the difference between all pages indexed in days versus a handful indexed in months.
The sitemap is also a diagnostic. Search Console reports how many submitted URLs are indexed and why the rest are not, which surfaces problems such as noindex tags or redirect chains that would otherwise go unnoticed.
How it works
The file follows the sitemaps.org XML format: a urlset containing url entries, each with a loc (the absolute canonical URL) and optionally lastmod (an ISO date). Priority and changefreq fields are ignored by Google. Sites with more than 50,000 URLs split into multiple files with a sitemap index. The sitemap's location is usually declared in robots.txt and submitted in Search Console under Sitemaps.
Lastmod must be real: a sitemap that stamps every URL with today's date on every build teaches Google to ignore the field. CMSs and builders generate and update the sitemap automatically when pages are published or edited; hand-built sites need a generator and a reminder to refresh it.
Example: a Trivandrum ayurveda centre
Kerala Veda Ayurveda in Kowdiar launches a site with 32 pages: one per treatment, a doctors page, packages priced from ₹4,500 a day, and locality pages for Kowdiar, Pattom and Kazhakoottam. Two weeks after launch only the homepage and two treatment pages are indexed. The owner submits sitemap.xml in Search Console; within six days 29 pages are indexed, and the Pages report reveals the remaining three were marked noindex by a template setting. After fixing that, all 32 appear, and the Panchakarma package page starts ranking for panchakarma treatment cost Trivandrum within a month.
Common mistakes
- Never submitting the sitemap, or submitting one that was generated once and forgotten.
- Listing URLs that redirect, return 404 or carry a noindex tag.
- Including non-canonical variants such as http or www versions.
- Faking lastmod with the build date on every URL.
- Confusing the XML sitemap with the HTML sitemap page meant for visitors.
How Neweb handles it
Neweb regenerates the XML sitemap every time a page is published or edited, uses real per-page modification dates, excludes redirects and noindex pages, submits it to Google Search Console during setup and reports indexing coverage in the monthly SEO summary.
XML Sitemap questions
Do I need a sitemap for a small website?
Yes. It costs nothing, speeds up indexing of new pages, and gives you an indexing report in Search Console that reveals problems early.
How do I submit a sitemap to Google?
Open Google Search Console, choose your property, go to Sitemaps, enter the sitemap URL (for example sitemap.xml) and click Submit. Also reference it in robots.txt.
Does a sitemap improve rankings?
Not directly. It improves discovery and recrawl speed, which lets good pages start ranking sooner and updates show faster.
What is the difference between an XML sitemap and an HTML sitemap?
The XML sitemap is a machine file for search engines. An HTML sitemap is a normal web page listing links for visitors, which also helps internal linking.
How often should a sitemap update?
Whenever a page is added, removed or changed. CMSs and builders do this automatically; a static site needs its generator rerun after edits.
