A CDN, or content delivery network, is a group of servers in many cities that stores copies of a website's images, scripts and pages and serves them from the location nearest to each visitor. It reduces load time, absorbs traffic spikes and protects the origin server from attacks.
Why it matters for an Indian small business
India's internet is mobile-first and uneven. A visitor in Guwahati on a Jio 4G connection fetching a 400 KB hero image from a server in Mumbai waits noticeably longer than one in Pune. A CDN with edge nodes in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru cuts that distance, and it caches images so the origin does the work once instead of ten thousand times during a festive sale.
It also feeds Core Web Vitals, which Google uses for ranking, and it is the cheapest form of resilience: when a WhatsApp broadcast or a newspaper mention sends a thousand people to your site in ten minutes, the CDN serves cached pages while a ₹99 shared host alone would fall over.
How it works
Your DNS points the domain at the CDN rather than directly at your host. When a visitor requests a page, the CDN edge closest to them checks its cache; if the file is there, it is served immediately. If not, the edge fetches it from your origin, stores it for a set time and serves it. Static files such as images, CSS and fonts cache well; dynamic pages can be cached briefly or bypassed.
Modern CDNs also compress files, convert images to WebP or AVIF on the fly, terminate SSL at the edge, and filter bot traffic. Cloudflare has a free tier; builders and managed hosts usually include a CDN by default so you never configure one.
Example: a Jodhpur furniture exporter
Marwar Woodcraft sells sheesham furniture to buyers in India, the UAE and the UK through a catalogue site with 300 product photographs. Without a CDN, a buyer in Dubai waited eight seconds for a category page. After routing the site through a CDN with automatic image conversion, the same page loads in under two seconds from an edge in the UAE, Indian retailers in Mumbai and Hyderabad see similar speeds, and the origin server in India now serves roughly 5 percent of requests. During a trade-fair week the site handled 40,000 visits without a change to hosting.
Common mistakes
- Uploading 5 MB photos and expecting the CDN to fix a problem that image compression should solve first.
- Caching pages that show prices or stock, then wondering why updates do not appear.
- Not purging the cache after a design change.
- Pointing DNS at a CDN without enabling SSL at both the edge and the origin.
- Paying for a CDN when the host already includes one.
How Neweb handles it
Neweb serves every site through a global CDN with Indian edge locations, automatic image compression and modern formats, and cache rules that purge on publish, so new prices and offers appear immediately while static assets stay fast.
CDN questions
Do I need a CDN for a small website?
If your host or builder includes one, yes, use it. If not, a free Cloudflare plan is worth setting up for any site with images and Indian visitors on mobile networks.
Does a CDN replace hosting?
No. The CDN caches and delivers; your origin host still stores the real site. Some static-site platforms blur the line by hosting entirely on the edge.
Will a CDN improve my Google ranking?
Indirectly. Faster pages improve Core Web Vitals, which is a ranking factor, and lower bounce rates. The CDN is one piece alongside image size and clean code.
What does a CDN cost in India?
Cloudflare and several others have free tiers that cover most small business sites. Paid plans start around ₹1,700 a month. Managed hosts and builders include it in the subscription.
Why do my site changes not show after I edit?
The CDN is serving a cached copy. Purge the cache or wait for the cache time to expire. Good platforms purge automatically when you publish.
