Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to measure a web page's real-world user experience: Largest Contentful Paint (loading, good under 2.5 seconds), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness, good under 200 milliseconds) and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability, good under 0.1). They are a confirmed Google ranking signal.
Why it matters for an Indian small business
Core Web Vitals are the only speed metrics Google has publicly tied to ranking, and they are reported for free in Google Search Console, so an agency or a competitor can see exactly which of your pages fail. For an Indian business the thresholds are harder to hit because Google measures real visitors, and real visitors here are on slower phones and networks than the global average. A page that passes on a flagship phone in Mumbai can fail on a ₹10,000 Android in Patna.
Passing is not a ranking rocket; it is a tie-breaker and a conversion lever. Pages that pass have lower bounce rates and more calls and form submissions, which is the result an owner actually cares about.
How it works
Chrome collects timings from real visitors who have opted in and reports the 75th percentile for each page or group of pages over 28 days. LCP measures when the largest visible element (usually a hero image or heading) is rendered. INP measures the delay between a tap or click and the screen updating, across the whole visit. CLS totals how much visible content jumps around while loading, such as a banner pushing text down.
Fixes map to each metric: LCP improves with smaller images, faster hosting and a CDN; INP improves by removing heavy JavaScript and third-party widgets; CLS improves by giving images and ads fixed dimensions and loading fonts carefully. Search Console shows which URLs fail and PageSpeed Insights explains why.
Example: a Hyderabad biryani cloud kitchen
Charminar Dum Kitchen takes 300 orders a day through its own site to avoid aggregator commissions. Search Console flags 14 menu pages as Poor: LCP is 4.8 seconds because the hero photo is 2.6 MB, and CLS is 0.31 because an offer banner loads late and shoves the menu down. The kitchen replaces the photo with a 180 KB WebP, reserves a fixed height for the banner and removes an unused review widget. Three weeks later all pages read Good, the order button appears 2.2 seconds sooner, and mobile orders rise 18 percent without any marketing spend.
Common mistakes
- Fixing the lab score in PageSpeed Insights while ignoring field data, which is what Google ranks on.
- Injecting banners, pop-ups and cookie bars without reserved space, which wrecks CLS.
- Loading chat, analytics and ad scripts synchronously at the top of the page.
- Treating a Needs Improvement status as fine; only Good counts.
- Testing only the homepage when the failing URLs are product or service pages.
How Neweb handles it
Neweb templates are built to pass all three metrics by default, images are compressed and sized automatically, layout space is reserved for dynamic blocks, and the SEO autopilot alerts you if a page drops out of the Good range in Search Console.
Core Web Vitals questions
What are the Core Web Vitals thresholds?
LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1, each measured at the 75th percentile of real visits. Anything above those is Needs Improvement or Poor.
Where can I see my Core Web Vitals?
In Google Search Console under Experience, which shows field data per URL group, and in PageSpeed Insights, which shows both field and lab data for a single URL.
What replaced First Input Delay?
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced First Input Delay in March 2024. It measures responsiveness across the whole visit, not just the first tap.
Do Core Web Vitals matter for a five-page site?
Yes, because the main effect is on visitors: a slow or jumpy page loses calls and enquiries regardless of how many pages you have.
Can a website builder pass Core Web Vitals?
Good ones do by default. Problems usually come from uploaded images and added widgets rather than the builder itself, so keep both under control.
