What is NAP Consistency?

Keeping your name, address and phone identical across every listing and page.

Definition

NAP consistency is the practice of keeping a business's name, address and phone number identical in format and content everywhere they appear online, including the website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, social profiles and directories. Consistent NAP helps search engines trust that all listings refer to the same business.

Why it matters for an Indian small business

Google builds its picture of a business by matching details across the web. If the signboard says Sri Balaji Electricals, the profile says Balaji Electricals & Hardware, the website footer shows an old landline and Justdial lists a different shop number, Google sees four half-matching entities and trusts none fully. The result is weaker map rankings and, occasionally, a profile that gets merged with or suspended because of a duplicate.

Indian addresses make this harder than most: Shop No. 4 versus Shop 4, Near Hanuman Mandir, Opp. SBI, landmark-based descriptions and inconsistent pin codes. Picking one exact format and using it everywhere is a small job with outsized effect on local visibility.

How it works

Choose the canonical version of each element: the legal or trading name without keyword additions, the address written one way (building, street, locality, city, state, PIN), and one primary phone number, ideally a mobile that also runs WhatsApp. Put it in the website footer and contact page, in LocalBusiness schema, in the Google Business Profile, and then audit every other place the business is listed and correct them.

Common sources to check in India: Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, TradeIndia, Zomato or Swiggy for food, Practo for clinics, UrbanClap-style platforms for services, Facebook and Instagram bios, and the Udyam certificate. Keep a single document with the canonical NAP so staff and vendors copy it rather than retyping it.

Example: a Chandigarh dental clinic

Smile Studio Dental in Sector 35 has been listed under three names over ten years: Dr. Kaur's Dental Clinic, Smile Studio and Smile Studio Dental Care. The address appears as SCO 12, SCO 12-13 and Shop 12, and the phone as a landline on the website but a mobile on Maps. An audit finds 14 listings; the owner standardises to Smile Studio Dental, SCO 12-13, Sector 35-C, Chandigarh 160022, with the mobile number everywhere, updates schema and the footer, and removes a duplicate Google profile. Over the following quarter the clinic moves from outside the pack to position two for dentist Sector 35, with no other changes made.

Common mistakes

  • Adding keywords or the city to the business name on Google but not on the signboard or website.
  • Using a call-tracking number on some listings and the real number on others.
  • Old addresses on directories after a move.
  • Landmark-style addresses that differ on every platform.
  • Duplicate Google profiles created by staff or agencies over the years.

How Neweb handles it

Neweb stores one canonical NAP for your business, uses it in the site footer, contact page and LocalBusiness schema, pushes the same values to your Google Business Profile, and flags listings on major Indian directories that differ so you can correct them.

FAQ

NAP Consistency questions

What does NAP stand for?

Name, Address and Phone number, the three core details that identify a local business across the web.

Does a small formatting difference really matter?

Minor punctuation differences are usually understood, but different names, numbers, suite labels or PIN codes create real ambiguity. Aim for identical text everywhere to be safe.

Where should my NAP appear on the website?

In the footer of every page, on the contact page as visible text, and inside LocalBusiness schema markup so search engines read it directly.

What if my business moved?

Update the Google Business Profile first, then the website, then every directory. Keep a list of listings so nothing is missed, and do not create a new profile for the new address.

Can I use a different phone number for ads?

Yes, in ad campaigns and landing pages, but keep the primary number on the profile, website and directories identical so citations stay consistent.
