What is Schema Markup?

Structured data code that tells search engines exactly what a page describes.

Definition

Schema markup is structured data added to a web page, usually as JSON-LD using the schema.org vocabulary, that describes the page's content in a form search engines can read precisely, such as a LocalBusiness with its address, hours and phone, a Product with price, or an FAQPage. It enables rich results and helps AI systems understand a business.

Why it matters for an Indian small business

Google can read a page, but schema removes the guesswork: it states that this is a dental clinic at this address, open these hours, with this rating, in a machine-readable block. The visible reward is rich results, such as star ratings, FAQ dropdowns and price snippets, which take more space on the results page and lift click-through rates. The quieter reward is entity understanding: Google and AI assistants link your site to your Google Business Profile and your brand, which matters for being mentioned in AI Overviews.

For Indian small businesses the useful types are few: LocalBusiness (or a subtype like Dentist or Restaurant), Organization, FAQPage, Product with offers in INR, Service, BreadcrumbList and Article for blog posts.

How it works

Markup is written as a JSON-LD script block in the page head or body. Each block declares a type and properties: a LocalBusiness block lists name, address with postal code, telephone, geo coordinates, openingHoursSpecification and priceRange. An FAQPage block lists each question and its answer, which must also be visible on the page. Google reads the block during crawling and decides whether to show a rich result; markup is a prerequisite, not a guarantee.

Validate with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. Keep the data consistent with the visible page and with your Google Business Profile, especially name, address and phone, because mismatches undermine both.

Example: an Udaipur boutique hotel

Haveli Lakeview, a 12-room heritage hotel near Gangaur Ghat, adds Hotel schema with address, geo coordinates, check-in time, star rating from 214 Google reviews, and an offers block showing rooms from ₹5,500 in INR. The rooms page carries FAQPage markup for questions such as Is parking available and Is the hotel near the City Palace. Within six weeks, search results for the hotel's name show a rating, price and FAQ dropdowns, and the listing occupies twice the space of the OTA results beneath it. Direct bookings, where the hotel keeps the 20 percent commission, grow by a quarter over the season.

Common mistakes

  • Marking up reviews or FAQs that are not visible on the page, which violates Google's guidelines.
  • Address or phone in schema that differs from the Google Business Profile.
  • Invalid JSON, so the whole block is ignored.
  • Using the generic Organization type when a specific LocalBusiness subtype exists.
  • Adding every schema type available instead of the three or four that apply.

FAQ

Schema Markup questions

Does schema markup improve rankings?

Not directly, but it enables rich results that raise click-through rates and helps Google and AI systems understand your business as an entity, which supports visibility.

Which schema types does a small business need?

LocalBusiness or its subtype, Organization, FAQPage for pages with questions, Product or Service with INR pricing, BreadcrumbList and Article for blog posts.

What format should schema be in?

JSON-LD, which Google recommends. It is a script block that does not change the visible page and is easy to generate and validate.

How do I check my schema?

Paste the URL into Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. Search Console also reports enhancement errors under the relevant report.

Can schema get my site penalised?

Marking up content that is not visible or is misleading, such as fake ratings, can lead to a manual action. Keep markup truthful and matching the page.
