Short answer: pick Shopify if you are a product business that will ship orders every day, you want checkout, inventory, abandoned-cart recovery and shipping labels to work without a plugin hunt, and roughly ₹24,000 to ₹30,000 a year plus gateway fees is acceptable. Pick WordPress with WooCommerce if you want to own the store outright, keep fixed costs near ₹5,000 a year, combine a blog or service pages with the shop, or need Indian specifics such as COD rules by pincode, GST invoices with HSN codes and UPI through the gateway of your choice. WooCommerce costs more in time; Shopify costs more in money.

Pricing in India: fixed costs versus fees
Shopify's Basic plan for Indian merchants is roughly ₹1,994 a month on a yearly bill, or about ₹2,420 month to month, as of October 2026. On top of that sit the domain, any paid theme, paid apps for reviews or GST invoicing, and the transaction fee Shopify adds when you use Razorpay or PhonePe instead of its own payments on lower tiers. A small Jaipur jewellery store doing twenty orders a day should budget ₹30,000 to ₹45,000 a year before gateway charges. Confirm on Shopify's India pricing page, because plan structures move.
WooCommerce is a free plugin on free software, so the fixed cost is the hosting. Indian shared hosting runs ₹149 to ₹299 a month on a long prepay, and a .in or .com domain is ₹699 to ₹999 a year after the first year. That is under ₹5,000 a year for the platform. The money goes elsewhere: a theme at ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, a paid shipping or invoicing plugin, and a freelancer at ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 a month if you do not want to touch updates. Our website cost guide breaks these line items down.
Ease of use: launching and running the store
Shopify is the easier platform by a wide margin on launch day. You sign up, pick a theme, add products with variants, connect Razorpay and Shiprocket from the app store, and the checkout, tax fields, order emails and inventory are already wired. A first-time seller in Indore can go from zero to a working store in a weekend without reading documentation. Day-to-day order handling in the Shopify app is also cleaner than any WooCommerce admin screen.
WooCommerce asks you to make decisions a hosted platform makes for you: which theme, which gateway plugin, which shipping plugin, how to generate GST invoices, how to cache product pages. None of it is difficult, but it is a list. Once set up, running the store is fine, and the WordPress editor is far better than Shopify for writing product guides and buying advice. If the thought of configuring plugins is unappealing, Shopify will cost you less stress even though it costs more money.
E-commerce and payments: UPI, COD and GST invoices
Both handle Indian payments, but differently. WooCommerce with the official Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or PhonePe plugin gives you UPI, cards, net banking, wallets and EMI at checkout with no platform fee on top of the gateway's own charge. Cash on delivery is a built-in method you can restrict by pincode or order value with a small plugin. GST invoices with HSN codes and place-of-supply logic come from plugins such as the WooCommerce PDF invoice add-ons. Read our note on COD versus prepaid orders before deciding your rules.
Shopify's checkout is the best in the business, and Razorpay, PhonePe and Cashfree all publish Shopify apps that bring UPI to it. The friction is cost and control: lower plans add a transaction fee when you use these gateways, and COD and GST invoicing usually rely on paid apps because Shopify's core was built for prepaid card markets. For a catalogue of fifty products shipping across India, Shopify's inventory, fulfilment and abandoned-cart tools are still worth the extra money for most sellers.
SEO: control versus clean defaults
WordPress gives you every SEO lever. Rank Math or Yoast handle titles, descriptions and schema, you can choose any URL structure, write product descriptions with proper headings, build buying guides that rank for "best silver anklets under 2000" style queries, and control caching and CDN for speed. The downside is that nothing is tuned until you tune it. Our guide to SEO-friendly product descriptions applies equally to both platforms.
Shopify ships sensible defaults: editable titles and meta, automatic sitemaps, canonical tags on product variants and fast themes. What you cannot change is the URL structure, so every product lives under /products/ and every category under /collections/, and you have limited say over robots.txt and the sitemap. For a store that sells and does not publish much content, that is rarely a ranking problem. For a store that wants a content engine next to the shop, WordPress wins.
Speed and hosting for Indian visitors
Shopify hosts every store on its own global infrastructure with a CDN, so a shopper in Lucknow on a 4G connection gets product images from a nearby edge. You never think about servers, backups or traffic spikes during a Diwali sale, which is a real advantage for a small team. Theme choice and app bloat are the only speed variables you control, and the official free themes score well on Lighthouse.
WooCommerce speed is your responsibility and your opportunity. A LiteSpeed host with a Mumbai or Singapore data centre, a lightweight theme and object caching will outperform most hosted stores. A cheap plan with a heavy theme and twenty plugins will load in six seconds and lose sales. Run both candidates through our website speed test and plan for a caching plugin from day one.
Support and maintenance
Shopify gives you one vendor and 24/7 chat and email support in English. Because Shopify owns the stack, an issue with checkout or a theme is usually theirs to fix, and security, updates and backups are invisible. There is no India phone line, and support can be slower during US business hours, but the overall burden on the owner is low.
WooCommerce has no single vendor. The host supports the server, the theme author supports the theme, the gateway plugin is supported by Razorpay or PayU, and WooCommerce itself by Automattic's forums. Updates are frequent and occasionally break something. Most Indian stores on WooCommerce either keep a freelancer on a small retainer or use managed WordPress hosting that handles updates and backups. Budget for one or the other honestly.
Who should pick which
Choose Shopify if products are the whole business, you will scale with Instagram and Google ads, you want checkout and fulfilment to just work, and the subscription is small next to your margins. Choose WooCommerce on WordPress if you want to own the store, keep fixed costs under ₹5,000 a year, mix content and commerce, or need specific Indian checkout logic without paying for apps.
If your store is really ten products next to a service business, neither may be the right size. The best website builder in India roundup covers lighter options, and the Shopify alternatives and WordPress alternatives pages rank each side in detail.
Where Neweb fits
Neweb is not a Shopify replacement for a serious product store, and we will say so plainly: if you ship dozens of orders a day, use Shopify or WooCommerce. Where Neweb fits is the business that mainly sells services or a handful of products and needs a fast site, a UPI QR and payment link, Google Business Profile and weekly SEO tuning handled for ₹249 a month with a free .in or .com domain. Because Neweb runs on a WordPress base, you can add WooCommerce later or export and leave if the store outgrows it.
WordPress vs Shopify questions
Is WooCommerce or Shopify cheaper in India?
WooCommerce has far lower fixed costs: roughly ₹5,000 a year for Indian hosting and a domain against ₹24,000 to ₹30,000 for Shopify Basic before apps and fees. Add a freelancer for maintenance and WooCommerce still usually costs less, but the gap shrinks. Prices are approximate as of October 2026, so check both vendors before deciding.
Does Shopify support UPI in India?
Yes, through gateway apps. Razorpay, PhonePe and Cashfree publish Shopify apps that add UPI, cards, net banking and wallets to the checkout. On lower Shopify plans a platform transaction fee applies when you use a third-party gateway, so factor that into your margins alongside the gateway's own charge.
Can I move from Shopify to WooCommerce?
Yes. Export products, customers and orders as CSV from the Shopify admin, import products into WooCommerce with its CSV importer or a migration plugin, and rebuild the theme. Map every /products/ and /collections/ URL to its new path with 301 redirects, and connect the same domain once the new store is tested.
Which is better for SEO, WordPress or Shopify?
WordPress gives you more control over URLs, schema, content and speed, which matters if you plan to publish buying guides and rank for long-tail searches. Shopify provides clean defaults that are enough for most product stores. The platform matters less than consistent product descriptions, fast pages and a steady flow of useful content.
Can I handle GST invoices on both platforms?
Yes. On WooCommerce, free and paid invoice plugins generate GST invoices with HSN codes and place-of-supply details. On Shopify you will normally install a GST invoicing app from the app store, most of which are paid. Both platforms let you set tax rates by product and state once configured correctly.
Do I need a developer for a WooCommerce store?
Not to launch. A WooCommerce-ready theme, the Razorpay plugin and a shipping plugin get a small store live without code. You will want help for speed tuning, custom checkout rules or anything that breaks after an update, which is why many Indian stores keep a freelancer on a small monthly retainer.
