Small business website statistics India (2026)
37 statistics on Indian small businesses, internet access, UPI, local search and website builders. Each is one sentence with its year and a link to the primary source (Ministry of MSME via PIB, TRAI, NPCI data via PIB, RBI, Google, W3Techs). Compiled October 2026; last checked 30 October 2026.
How many small businesses in India have a website, and how many customers are online?
As on August 2026, 9.16 crore MSMEs were registered on the Udyam platform (Ministry of MSME). India had 1,092.79 million internet subscribers at end-March 2026 (TRAI), and UPI moved ₹314.23 lakh crore across 24,161.69 crore transactions in FY 2025-26 (NPCI data via PIB). The last primary study of SMB web presence (KPMG-Google, 2017) found 68% of Indian SMBs completely offline and 2% actively selling or promoting online; no newer government count exists.
| Udyam-registered MSMEs | 9.16 crore as on August 2026 (PIB, Ministry of MSME) |
|---|---|
| Internet subscribers | 1,092.79 million at end-March 2026 (TRAI) |
| UPI value, FY 2025-26 | ₹314.23 lakh crore across 24,161.69 crore transactions (NPCI data via PIB) |
| SMBs offline (last primary study) | 68% completely offline, 2% actively online (KPMG-Google, January 2017) |
Every figure below carries a date and a link to the original publisher. Where no primary source could be confirmed, the number was left out.
Facts checked October 2026.
Most "India small business statistics" articles repeat each other without a source. Every number here is one sentence with the year it refers to and a link to the organisation that published it. Secondary blogs, aggregators and unattributed estimates were excluded, which is why some widely repeated "facts" (such as a current share of MSMEs with websites) do not appear. Units: 1 crore = 10 million, 1 lakh = 100,000, so 9.16 crore MSMEs = 91.6 million and ₹314 lakh crore = ₹314 trillion.
How many small businesses are there in India?
The Udyam registry is the only running count. It adds formal MSMEs on the Udyam Registration Portal to informal micro enterprises on the Udyam Assist Platform, so the total jumps as shops are formalised.

How many Indian MSMEs have a website?
Nobody has counted recently. The Ministry of MSME publishes no web-presence data; the last primary study with a stated sample is from 2017, and SIDBI's 2025 survey measures marketing channels and payments, the closest current proxy.
- 68% of Indian SMBs were completely offline and only 2% actively sold or promoted their business online in 2017 (Kantar IMRB telephone survey of 504 SMBs, November 2016).Source: KPMG-Google, Jan 2017 (PDF)
- Digitally engaged SMBs grew profits up to two times faster than offline SMBs, and 51% of digitally enabled SMBs sold beyond their city against 29% of offline SMBs (2017).Source: KPMG-Google, Jan 2017 (PDF)
- Digitally enabled SMBs employed up to five times more people than offline SMBs (2017).Source: KPMG-Google, Jan 2017 (PDF)
- More than 90% of MSMEs surveyed by SIDBI in 2025 accepted digital payments, while about 18% had availed digital lending.Source: SIDBI, May 2025 (PDF)
- Only 13% of surveyed MSMEs used digital marketing in 2025; 24% relied on in-person marketing, 18% on referrals, 16% on print and 18% on mail or telemarketing, and almost 70% preferred traditional modes.Source: SIDBI, May 2025 (PDF)
Claims that "only 1% of MSMEs have a website" or "16 to 18 million MSMEs are online" circulate widely but could not be traced to a published study with a stated sample, so they are not listed.

- A small business website in India costs ₹3,000 to ₹2,00,000 or more depending on the route, as of October 2026.Source: Neweb price check, Oct 2026
- Freelancers typically charge ₹5,000 to ₹50,000 upfront plus ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 a year for domain, hosting and edits; agencies start near ₹25,000 and exceed ₹2,00,000 with ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 monthly retainers.Source: Neweb price check, Oct 2026
- Dollar-priced builders such as Wix and Squarespace convert to roughly ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 a month; a .in or .com domain is ₹600 to ₹1,500 a year and shared hosting ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 a year.Source: Neweb price check, Oct 2026
- Neweb's Starter plan is from $9 a month billed yearly ($19 month-to-month) including domain, hosting, SSL, Google Business Profile setup and SEO, with a free $0 plan to start; Hostinger's long-prepay plans, at roughly ₹149 to ₹299 a month, are the cheapest builder route without those services.Source: Neweb price check, Oct 2026
What does this mean for a small business?
- Customers are online before businesses are. About 1.09 billion internet subscriptions and 886 million active users, against the only primary study of SMB web presence finding 68% offline. The gap is widest in rural India, where subscriptions per 100 people (48.31) are under half the urban figure.
- Payments are solved; discovery is not. Over 90% of surveyed MSMEs take digital payments and UPI moves ₹314 lakh crore a year, yet only 13% use digital marketing. A website plus Google Business Profile is the cheapest fix.
- Mobile first is not optional. 96% of internet subscriptions are wireless and the average user consumes 25.51 GB a month at ₹8 per GB. A site that is slow on a mid-range Android phone is invisible to most of India.
- Google Maps is the front door. Google's figures (2.7x reputable, 70% more visits, 50% more purchase consideration) are about the Business Profile. The website's job is to be the link the profile points to.
- Budget realistically. A credible site costs from $9 a month on a bundled builder or ₹25,000 and up from an agency, small against not appearing when someone searches "near me".

Frequently asked questions
How many MSMEs are there in India in 2026?
As on August 2026, 9.16 crore MSMEs were registered on the Udyam platform (Udyam Registration Portal plus Udyam Assist Platform), employing more than 40 crore people, per a PIB factsheet from the Ministry of MSME. As of 2024, UPI carried about 49% of global real-time payment volume.
Do "near me" searches matter for small businesses in India?
Yes. Google's India Year in Search 2025 listed "Earthquake near me" as the top trending "Near Me" query, and Google India reported "thrift store near me" searches up 600% in the year to October 2026.
