What is Udyam Registration?

The free government registration that issues an MSME certificate and Udyam number.

Definition

Udyam Registration is the free, online registration on the Government of India's Udyam portal through which a micro, small or medium enterprise obtains a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate. It replaced Udyog Aadhaar in July 2020 and is the official proof of MSME status needed for government schemes and benefits.

Why it matters for an Indian small business

The Udyam certificate unlocks concrete money: priority sector lending and collateral-free loans under CGTMSE, the right to delayed-payment interest when a buyer pays after 45 days, exemption from earnest money deposits in government tenders, a 15 percent capital subsidy under CLCSS for eligible machinery, and lower fees for trademark and patent filing. Many banks ask for it before opening a current account with concessional charges, and state governments tie electricity duty and stamp duty concessions to it.

It costs nothing and takes under an hour. Consultants charging ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 are filling in a free form; the only official site is udyamregistration.gov.in.

How it works

The proprietor, partner or director enters their Aadhaar on the portal and verifies by OTP, then provides PAN, GSTIN (if registered), bank details, business activity (manufacturing or services), NIC code, number of employees and investment and turnover figures. The system pulls investment and turnover from income tax and GST records automatically for later years, classifies the enterprise as micro, small or medium, and issues a Udyam Registration Number in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 along with a downloadable certificate.

One registration covers all activities and locations of the enterprise. Details update automatically each year from filed returns, and the classification changes only after the enterprise exceeds a limit for two consecutive years, with benefits continuing for a transition period.

Example: a Madurai catering business

Meenakshi Caterers serves weddings and corporate events across Madurai and Dindigul with about ₹90 lakh in annual turnover. A hotel client routinely pays 90 days late. The owner registers on the Udyam portal using his Aadhaar and PAN in forty minutes, is classified as a micro enterprise, and adds the Udyam number to the website's about page and invoices. With the certificate he invokes the 45-day payment rule, and the hotel settles the outstanding ₹4.6 lakh with interest. The same certificate later supports a collateral-free ₹10 lakh loan under CGTMSE to buy a second delivery van, and he qualifies for a state subsidy on a commercial kitchen upgrade.

Common mistakes

  • Paying a third-party site that mimics the official portal.
  • Registering separate Udyam numbers for each branch or activity instead of one.
  • Entering the wrong NIC code, which can affect scheme eligibility.
  • Forgetting to link PAN and GSTIN, which is now mandatory where applicable.
  • Treating the certificate as a one-time document and never using it to claim benefits.
