What is a Keyword?

The word or phrase a searcher types that you want a page to rank for.

Definition

A keyword in SEO is a word or phrase that people type into a search engine and that a web page is written to rank for, such as dentist in Indore or wholesale saree fabric Surat. Keywords connect what customers search with the pages that answer them and are the starting point of all SEO work.

Why it matters for an Indian small business

Every Google search is a customer stating a need in their own words, and those words are rarely the ones a business uses. A clinic says dental implants; patients search tooth replacement cost Indore. A manufacturer says SS 304 fasteners; buyers search stainless steel bolt supplier Rajkot. Choosing the customer's phrase rather than your own is the difference between a page that gets traffic and one that does not.

Keywords also set priorities. A term with 5,000 monthly searches in India is attractive, but if the first page is national brands and marketplaces, a 200-search city-specific phrase you can actually win is worth more. Search Console shows which keywords already bring impressions, which is the cheapest research there is.

How it works

Keywords are classified by length and intent. Short head terms (website builder) have high volume and competition; long-tail keywords (website builder for tuition classes in Pune) are specific and easier to rank for. Intent can be informational, navigational, commercial or transactional, and Google shows different kinds of results for each.

Research combines Google autocomplete, the People also ask box, Search Console data, and tools that estimate volume. Each page then targets one primary keyword plus a few related phrases, placed naturally in the title, the H1, the first paragraph, one or two subheadings and the image alt text. Repeating the phrase beyond what reads naturally does nothing and can hurt.

Example: a Rajkot bearing manufacturer

Saurashtra Bearings makes deep-groove ball bearings for pump makers. Their old site targeted bearings, a term dominated by SKF and marketplaces. Research shows buyers search ball bearing manufacturer Rajkot, 6205 bearing price and bearing supplier for submersible pumps. They create a page for each: one with the company and factory details, one with a price table for standard sizes starting at ₹38, and one aimed at pump OEMs with a sample order process. Within four months the 6205 page ranks third in India, and purchase managers from Coimbatore and Ahmedabad begin sending RFQs through the form.

Common mistakes

  • Targeting the industry's generic term instead of what a buyer in your city types.
  • Putting ten keywords on one page so it ranks for none.
  • Stuffing the phrase into every sentence.
  • Ignoring Search Console, which lists the exact queries already showing your site.
  • Choosing keywords by volume alone without checking who ranks on page one.

FAQ

Keyword questions

How many keywords should a page target?

One primary keyword and two to four closely related phrases. If two keywords mean different things, they need different pages.

Where do I find keywords for free?

Google autocomplete, the People also ask and Related searches sections, Google Search Console for your own site, and free keyword idea tools. Customer WhatsApp messages are also a goldmine of real phrasing.

What is keyword difficulty?

An estimate of how hard it is to rank on page one for a term, based on the authority of the sites already there. Look at the actual first page: if it is all big brands, pick a more specific phrase.

Should I use Hindi or regional keywords?

If customers search that way, yes. Queries in Hindi, Hinglish and regional languages are growing, and a page in the customer's language can rank with little competition.

Do keywords still matter with AI search?

Yes, though phrasing matters less and clear answers matter more. AI Overviews still draw from pages that match the topic and answer the question plainly.
