What is a SERP?

The search engine results page Google shows for a query, with all its features.

Definition

A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page a search engine displays in response to a query. It contains organic results, paid ads and features such as the local map pack, AI Overviews, featured snippets, People also ask and images. The layout varies by query, device and location.

Why it matters for an Indian small business

Ranking number one no longer means being at the top of the screen. On a phone in India, a query like best dentist in Nagpur may show an AI Overview, three ads, a map pack with three clinics, a People also ask box and only then the first organic link, which can be a full screen or two down. Knowing what the SERP looks like for your important queries tells you where the clicks actually go and which features you should aim for.

It also sets expectations. An agency promising first position for a query whose SERP is dominated by a map pack is selling the wrong thing; the Google Business Profile is what wins that page.

How it works

Google assembles each SERP from several systems: a ranking of web pages, a local ranking for Maps, an ads auction, and feature triggers for snippets, images, videos and AI Overviews. Which features appear depends on intent, and position depends on device and the searcher's location, so a result in Mumbai differs from one in Nashik for the same words.

Each organic result shows a title, URL and description drawn from your page's meta tags or rewritten by Google, plus optional rich results such as star ratings or FAQ dropdowns from structured data. Tracking tools and Search Console report your position, but checking the real SERP from a phone in incognito mode with location on is the honest test.

Example: a Nagpur dental clinic

Smile Line Dental in Dharampeth hires a freelancer who reports a page-one rank for dentist Nagpur. The owner opens the search on her own phone: two ads, a map pack with three competitors, a People also ask box, and her clinic at organic position four, which is below the fold on mobile. She shifts effort to the map pack: completes the Google Business Profile, adds 40 photographs, collects 120 reviews over four months, and posts weekly. The clinic enters the three-pack for the query, and calls from Google rise from 25 to 90 a month even though the organic position barely moved.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring success by organic position without looking at what sits above it.
  • Ignoring the map pack for local queries.
  • Not using structured data, so competitors get star ratings and FAQ dropdowns while you show a plain link.
  • Checking rankings from a desktop in an office when customers search from phones in the field.
  • Writing meta descriptions nobody reads because Google rewrites them to match the query.
