What is a Call to Action?

The button or line that tells a visitor exactly what to do next.

Definition

A call to action, or CTA, is a button, link or line of text on a web page or message that tells the visitor what to do next, such as Book an appointment, Chat on WhatsApp or Pay now. A clear call to action turns interest into a measurable step and is the main lever of a page's conversion rate.

Why it matters for an Indian small business

Visitors do what they are told, and a page that does not tell them anything loses them. Many Indian small business sites end every page with a paragraph and no button, or with Contact us leading to a form nobody fills. A specific CTA that matches the visitor's stage, such as Get a quote on WhatsApp for a service page or Pay the ₹500 booking amount for a confirmed slot, routinely doubles the number of actions from the same visitors.

The wording also sets expectations and reduces hesitation: Call now, open till 9 pm tells a customer at 8:30 that someone will answer. Free, no sign-up removes the fear of being charged.

How it works

A good CTA states the action and the outcome in a few words, uses a verb, and sits where the visitor has just received the reason to act: after the price, after the reviews, at the end of a service description, and in a sticky bar on mobile. It is visually distinct, one per section, and the primary CTA repeats two or three times on a long page.

Match the CTA to intent. Informational pages get a soft CTA (Download the checklist, See prices); commercial pages get a direct one (Book now, Order on WhatsApp). Test one element at a time: wording, colour, placement. Track each CTA as an event so you know which copy and position produce calls and payments rather than just clicks.

Example: a Ludhiana bridal makeup artist

Simran Makeup Studio's site ended each page with Contact us and a form. The artist replaces it with three CTAs placed after the portfolio: Check my date on WhatsApp with a prefilled message asking for the wedding date, See bridal packages leading to a price page starting at ₹15,000, and Book with ₹2,000 advance opening a UPI QR. A sticky mobile bar carries the WhatsApp CTA throughout. In the following wedding season, WhatsApp enquiries triple, the artist reports that most arrive with a date already stated, and advances via UPI remove the tentative bookings that used to cancel.

Common mistakes

  • Generic text such as Submit, Click here or Learn more.
  • Five competing buttons in one screen.
  • CTAs that lead to a form when customers prefer WhatsApp or a call.
  • No CTA on blog posts and FAQ pages that get most of the traffic.
  • Hiding the primary CTA below the fold on mobile.

How Neweb handles it

Neweb templates place a primary CTA (WhatsApp, call, book or pay) above the fold and after every major section, add a sticky mobile action bar, and track each CTA click as a conversion in analytics so you can see which wording and placement work.

FAQ

Call to Action questions

What makes a good call to action?

A verb, a specific outcome, and placement right after the reason to act. Chat on WhatsApp for a quote beats Contact us; Book a free 15-minute consult beats Submit.

How many CTAs should a page have?

One primary action repeated at natural decision points, plus at most one secondary option. More than that splits attention and lowers clicks on all of them.

Where should the CTA be placed?

Above the fold, after the price or offer, after reviews or proof, and at the end. On mobile, a sticky bar with the primary CTA keeps it visible while scrolling.

Should I use WhatsApp or a form as the CTA?

For most Indian customers WhatsApp or a call converts better than a form. Offer WhatsApp as primary and keep a short form for those who prefer it.

How do I test CTAs?

Change one variable, such as wording or position, track clicks and downstream conversions for two to four weeks, then keep the winner and test the next variable.
