How to Get Your Business on Google Search and Maps in 2026 (Claim, Verify, Recover)

The current free flow for adding a business to Google: claim a listing that already exists, pass video verification, recover a suspended profile, and rank.

Getting your business on Google Search and Google Maps is free, and as of September 2026 the whole flow lives inside the Google Maps app and Google Search itself. There is no separate Google Business Profile app any more, most new profiles are verified by a short video rather than a postcard, and a large share of Indian businesses discover that a listing for them already exists before they ever create one. This guide covers the current flow end to end: creating or claiming the profile, passing verification, recovering a suspended profile, and the handful of things that decide whether you show up in the map pack.

If you have never set up a profile and want the fundamentals first, our guide to getting a Google Business listing covers those. This post is about the 2026 mechanics and the situations that trip people up.

First, check whether Google already lists you

Search your business name plus your area on Google Maps. If a pin exists with your name and address, do not create a new profile. Duplicates get suspended, and the existing one usually already has reviews and photos attached. Instead:

  • Open the listing in the Maps app or on Google Search and look for Own this business? or Claim this business.
  • If the listing is unclaimed, tapping it starts the normal verification flow under your Google account.
  • If it says the profile is already managed by someone else, you can Request access. Google emails the current owner, who has three days to respond. If they do not, Google usually lets you proceed to verify it yourself. If they deny it, you can appeal with proof that you run the business (registration, GST certificate, utility bill at the address).

This matters more than it sounds. Ex-employees, old marketing agencies, and well-meaning relatives create a large share of Indian listings, and the business owner has no idea until they try to change the phone number.

Creating a profile from scratch

  1. Sign in to the Google account you want to own the business. Use a business email you control, not an agency's or an employee's.
  2. In the Google Maps app, tap your profile picture, then Add your business. On desktop, search "add my business to Google" while signed in, or go to the Business Profile Manager.
  3. Enter the exact business name as it appears on your signboard and registration. Do not add keywords, city names, or slogans; "Sharma Dental Clinic" is fine, "Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist Rohini" is a suspension waiting to happen.
  4. Choose the most specific primary category (Dental clinic, not Medical clinic). You can add secondary categories later.
  5. Add the address if customers visit you. If you go to customers instead (plumbers, tutors, caterers), choose the service-area option and hide the address; showing a residential address for a service business is a common cause of suspension.
  6. Add phone, hours, and website. If you do not have a website yet, Google will offer a free one-page site; a real domain works much better for ranking and trust.
  7. Pick a verification method.

Verification in 2026: what to expect

Google decides which methods to offer, and video is now the default for most new Indian profiles.

  • Video verification: you record a continuous video in the app that shows your storefront or signage, the surroundings that prove the location, your equipment or stock, and proof of management such as unlocking the door or opening the billing counter. For service-area businesses, show your vehicle, tools, and business documents. Do not stop and restart the recording. Review typically takes a few hours to about five business days.
  • Live video call: a Google representative walks you through the same proof on a call. Offered when the recorded video was inconclusive.
  • Phone or SMS: a code sent to the business number, offered mainly to businesses with a long-standing web footprint.
  • Email: a code to a domain email such as info@yourbusiness.in, more likely if your website is already linked.
  • Postcard: still exists but is rarely offered now, and can take two to three weeks to reach an Indian address.

Before recording, make sure the signboard is legible, the address on the board matches what you typed, and you have the GST certificate or Udyam certificate on hand. Businesses with a website whose contact page shows the same name, address, and phone get through review faster.

What to fill in the day you are verified

An empty verified profile ranks behind a complete unverified competitor. Do these in the first hour:

  • Write a description that says what you do, for whom, and where. The Google Business description generator gives you a clean 750-character draft to edit.
  • Upload at least ten real photos: exterior, interior, team, products or work. Skip stock images.
  • Set opening hours including holidays, and add special hours for Diwali, Eid, and other closures as they come up.
  • Add the website link, WhatsApp number where the field is offered, and booking or menu links if relevant.
  • Turn on messaging and reply within a day, because response time is shown publicly.
  • Ask three existing customers for a review that day. Our guide on getting more Google reviews has scripts that work for Indian customers.

If your profile is suspended

A suspension notice arrives by email and the profile disappears from Maps. Do not create a new one; that compounds the problem. Instead:

  1. Read the notice for whether it is a hard suspension (profile removed) or soft suspension (profile visible but you lose management access).
  2. Fix the cause before appealing. The usual causes: keywords in the business name, a virtual office or coworking address listed as a storefront, a residential address shown for a service business, multiple profiles for the same business, hours or category that do not match what the video showed, or a website that redirects somewhere unrelated.
  3. File one appeal through the Business Profile appeals tool. Attach evidence: business registration or Udyam certificate, GST certificate, a utility bill at the address, and photos of the storefront with signage. Keep the explanation factual and short.
  4. Wait. Responses take from a few days to a few weeks. Repeated appeals slow things down rather than speed them up.

Most suspensions on genuine businesses come down to the name field or the address type, and both are fixable in a minute once you know.

Ranking basics that actually move the needle

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance, and prominence. You control the first and the third.

  • Primary category is the single biggest lever. Change it and your rankings change the same week.
  • Reviews with a steady flow beat a burst. Two a week for a year outperforms forty in one month. Reply to every one.
  • A complete profile with photos, services, products, and a Q&A section filled in by you.
  • Consistency: the same name, address, and phone on your website, on Justdial and IndiaMART, and on the profile. Mismatches quietly dilute trust.
  • A real website on your own domain, linked from the profile, with a page that names your services and your area. This is where a Google-generated one-pager falls short.
  • Posts and photos every couple of weeks signal that the business is active.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free to add my business to Google?

Yes. Creating, verifying, and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Anyone charging you a "Google listing fee" is selling their own labour, not a Google product. Google Ads is separate and optional.

How long does video verification take?

The recording takes under five minutes. Google's review usually completes within a few hours to about five business days; if you hear nothing after a week, check the profile for a pending status or a request for a live call.

Someone else owns my business listing. Can I get it back?

Yes. Use Request access on the listing. The current manager has three days to respond, after which Google typically allows you to verify it. Have your business registration and a utility bill at the address ready in case of a dispute.

Can I list a home-based business without showing my home address?

Yes. Choose the service-area business option during setup and clear the address field. You still verify by video, showing your workspace and documents rather than a storefront.

Why does my verified profile not appear when I search my business name?

New profiles can take a few days to appear, and a profile that is incomplete or has a name that differs from your signboard may be filtered. Check that the profile shows a verified badge in your dashboard, fill in every field, and search from a device physically near the business.
