Neweb / Free tools / PAN Card Validator

PAN Card Validator.

Enter a 10-character PAN and, optionally, the surname or entity name. We check the structure, tell you what kind of taxpayer the fourth letter indicates, and whether the fifth letter matches the name. Format check only, nothing is sent anywhere.

This checks the format only. It cannot tell whether the PAN is issued, active, linked to Aadhaar or belongs to the person in front of you; for that use Verify Your PAN on the income tax e-filing portal.

The PAN never leaves your browser. For KYC, TDS or vendor onboarding, always verify the PAN against the e-filing portal or through a PAN verification API, and match it to the PAN card or Form 26AS.

The Permanent Account Number is asked for on almost every business form in India: vendor onboarding, TDS deduction, GST registration, bank account opening, property deals, donations above Rs 2,000 to an NGO claiming 80G, and any cash transaction above Rs 50,000. A PAN typed with a letter O instead of a zero, or with the fourth letter wrong, fails at the TDS return stage or the KYC desk, and a PAN that does not match the name invites a 20 percent deduction under Section 206AA.

This validator catches the structural mistakes before they cost time. It checks the pattern, five letters, four digits and a letter, and reads the two letters that carry meaning. The fourth letter tells you what kind of taxpayer holds the PAN: P for an individual, C for a company, H for a Hindu Undivided Family, F for a firm or LLP, A for an association of persons, T for a trust, and a few rarer types. The fifth letter is the first letter of the surname for an individual, or of the entity name for everyone else, and if you enter the name the tool checks that it matches.

What it cannot do is tell you whether the PAN is real, active, linked to Aadhaar or belongs to the person showing it. The only authoritative check is the Verify Your PAN service on the income tax e-filing portal.

How to use the pan card validator

  1. Type or paste the PAN. Spaces, hyphens and lowercase are cleaned automatically, and the check runs as soon as ten characters are in.

  2. Optionally enter the surname (for an individual) or the entity name so the tool can compare the fifth letter.

  3. Read the ten-cell breakdown: green cells pass, red cells show where the structure is wrong.

  4. Note the holder type from the fourth letter; a vendor claiming to be a company whose PAN has P in the fourth place is a sole proprietor using a personal PAN.

  5. For TDS, KYC or vendor onboarding, verify on the e-filing portal or through a verification API; this tool checks format only.

Why this matters for your business

Wrong PAN means 20 percent TDS. Section 206AA treats an invalid PAN as no PAN, so the deductor must apply the higher rate and the payee loses the credit. The TRACES system rejects returns with structurally invalid PANs.

The fourth letter reveals the vendor type. It tells you whether an invoice comes from a company, a firm or an individual, which decides the TDS rate under 194C and how to address the contract.

NGOs need donor PANs right. Form 10BD, the statement of donations, requires each donor PAN; an invalid one is rejected and the donor loses the 80G certificate.

Tips for better results

  • The fourth letter is the quickest sanity check: a Pvt Ltd company must have C, an LLP or partnership F, a trust T, a proprietor P.
  • For individuals the fifth letter is the surname as recorded by the Income Tax Department, which may be the father name in some South Indian naming conventions; do not reject a PAN only on that basis without checking.
  • Zero and O, one and I, five and S are the usual confusion; the validator flags digits in the letter positions and vice versa.
  • Minors and foreign nationals can hold a PAN; the format is the same.
  • For TDS, collect a copy of the PAN card or a Form 26AS screenshot along with the number, and verify it in bulk on TRACES before filing the quarterly return.
  • A PAN not linked to Aadhaar becomes inoperative; TDS on payments to an inoperative PAN is at the higher rate. Ask new vendors to confirm the link.

Example

A real-world walkthrough

A Pune NGO is preparing its Form 10BD donor statement and has a spreadsheet of 400 donors with PANs collected over the year from online forms. Several were typed on phones, and the accountant wants to catch the obvious errors before uploading.

She pastes the doubtful ones into the validator one at a time. One has the letter O in the sixth position, which the breakdown shows in red as a digit position holding a letter. Another has F as the fourth letter although the donor is an individual, so it is probably the PAN of the donor firm, and the receipt needs to be reissued in the firm name. A third is fine in format but the fifth letter is M while the donor surname is Reddy, which prompts a call; it turns out the department records the donor by his father name. She fixes the first, reissues the second, keeps the third, and the upload goes through without rejection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the format of a PAN number?

A PAN is a ten-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department under Section 139A. The format is five letters, four digits and one letter, for example ABCPK1234L. The first three letters are an alphabetic series running from AAA to ZZZ. The fourth letter indicates the type of holder: P for an individual, C for a company, H for a Hindu Undivided Family, F for a firm or LLP, A for an association of persons, T for a trust, B for a body of individuals, L for a local authority, J for an artificial juridical person and G for government. The fifth letter is the first letter of the surname for an individual or of the name for any other entity. The four digits are a sequence number, and the last letter is an alphabetic check character. The validator tests each of these positions.

What does the fourth letter of a PAN mean?

It identifies the category of taxpayer. P is an individual person, including sole proprietors who use their personal PAN for the business. C is a company incorporated under the Companies Act, private or public. H is a Hindu Undivided Family, which is a separate taxable person with its own PAN. F is a partnership firm, and limited liability partnerships are also issued PANs with F. A is an association of persons, such as a registered society, a club or an unincorporated joint venture. T is a trust, which covers most charitable and religious organisations and many NGOs. B is a body of individuals, L a local authority such as a municipal corporation, J an artificial juridical person such as a university or a temple deity, and G a government entity. For a business, the fourth letter is a quick way to check that the PAN on an invoice matches the legal form the vendor claims.

What is the rule for the fifth letter of a PAN?

For an individual, the fifth letter is the first letter of the surname or last name as recorded in the PAN application. For every other type of holder, company, firm, HUF, trust and so on, it is the first letter of the name of the entity. So a person named Rahul Kumar would have K as the fifth letter, and Sunrise Traders Private Limited would have S. The check is useful for catching a PAN that belongs to someone else, but it is not foolproof, because the surname recorded with the department can differ from the one a person uses: many South Indian applicants record the father name or an initial as the surname, and married women may have registered a maiden name. Treat a mismatch as a reason to ask, not as proof of an invalid PAN.

Can this tool tell me whether a PAN is genuine or active?

No. A PAN has no publicly documented checksum, so no offline tool can distinguish an issued PAN from a well-formed string that was never issued. The validator confirms only that the structure follows the rules, which is enough to catch typing errors but not fraud. To confirm that a PAN exists, is active, is linked to Aadhaar and matches a name and date of birth, use the Verify Your PAN service on the income tax e-filing portal, the bulk PAN verification facility on TRACES for deductors, or a licensed PAN verification API through NSDL Protean or UTIITSL. Banks, brokers and payment companies are required to use those services for KYC; this page is a first-pass cleaner, not a substitute.

Why does TDS go up if a PAN is invalid?

Section 206AA requires a deductor to apply the higher of the normal rate or 20 percent when the payee has not furnished a PAN, and a PAN that is structurally invalid or does not belong to the payee is treated as not furnished. Since the 2023 rules, a PAN that is inoperative because it is not linked to Aadhaar attracts the same higher rate. The TDS return in Form 26Q is validated against the PAN database, and entries with invalid PANs are flagged and the credit does not reach the payee Form 26AS. Checking the format on this page, then verifying on TRACES before filing, avoids both the higher deduction and the correction statements that follow a rejected return.

Is a PAN mandatory for a small business or freelancer?

Yes, in practice. A sole proprietor uses their personal PAN for the business, and it is required to open a current account, register under GST, receive payments from companies that deduct TDS, and file the income tax return. Partnership firms, LLPs, companies, trusts and societies need their own PAN as separate taxable persons. Section 139A also requires a PAN to be quoted for cash deposits above Rs 50,000 in a day, purchase or sale of immovable property above Rs 10 lakh, cash payments above Rs 50,000 to hotels or for foreign travel, and several other transactions. An NGO needs its own PAN to apply for 12A and 80G registration and to file Form 10BD listing donor PANs.

Can I use this to check PANs of my donors or vendors in bulk?

Not in bulk; the tool checks one PAN at a time and is meant for cleaning doubtful entries by hand. For a list of several hundred donors or vendors, the Income Tax Department provides bulk PAN verification on the TRACES portal for registered deductors, and NSDL Protean and UTIITSL offer a paid online PAN verification service for entities that need it regularly. Those services confirm that each PAN is issued and return the name as recorded, which is what a Form 10BD or a TDS return actually needs. Use this page for the handful of entries that look wrong, and the official services for the whole file.

Does this tool send the PAN anywhere or store it?

No. The format check runs entirely in your browser with a pattern match; there is no server call, no logging and no history. That is deliberate, because a PAN is sensitive personal data under the DPDP Act and should not be sent to a third party without a reason. When you do need to verify a PAN against the department database, do it on the e-filing portal or through a verification service your organisation has a contract with, and keep the PAN copies you collect in a locked folder or encrypted drive rather than in a shared spreadsheet.
